LING 180A Dynamics of Indigenous Language Shift

Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 31 to March 9, 2023
Location: Online; 6 to 8 pm
Instructor: Iehnhotonkwas Bonnie Jane Maracle
This course introduces the human dynamics and political and social
factors associated with Indigenous language shifts and language loss, including the profound psychological, intellectual and spiritual effects on individuals, families, communities and cultures. Language revitalization is explored as a source of healing and empowerment.

LING 187 Special Topics in Language Revitalization: Policy and Planning

Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 18 to May 25, 2023
Location: Online; 6 to 8 pm
Instructor: Dr. Heather Bliss

This course will review and analyze theoretical papers, policy and planning documents, and policy and planning guides to reach an understanding of the issues related to language policy and planning in Indigenous language revitalization. Participants will apply their knowledge and skills to develop projects that evaluate, adapt, or develop policy and planning materials relevant to their own experiences and interests.
